Preparing for Year B

One of the most challenging yet most rewarding classes I ever took was a graduate course on New Testament theology. The professor was masterful and had a command and understanding of Scripture that was a true source of inspiration. As we delved into the intricate details of each Gospel account, our curiosity and thirst for knowledge continued to grow. It was humbling to recognize we had really only scratched the surface of readings heard so many times before. We knew we were only beginning a reflection that would last a lifetime.

As we prepare for the beginning of a new liturgical year—Year B—in late November, we are again offered the opportunity to encounter and reflect on readings from the Gospel of Mark. Commonly accepted as the oldest (and shortest) of the Gospel accounts and used as a source for both Matthew and Luke, Mark continues to help us understand who Jesus is—starting with the very first line of his Gospel.

Let’s begin the Church’s new year by preparing ourselves and the whole community for the rich readings that are a part of the liturgical cycle. By reflecting together, we will continue to grow as the People of God and become the Good News we proclaim each Sunday. We too will recognize that we are only beginning a reflection that will last a lifetime.

Here are some ways you might prepare for Year B:

• Read commentaries on Mark.
• Review the Church’s liturgical cycles and look over the readings for Year B.
• Gather with a group to proclaim, listen to, reflect upon, and share Mark’s Gospel.
• Attend or offer a Bible study on Mark’s Gospel.
• Use the Lectionary Background Resources in the Catechists and Teachers link at www.FaithFirst.com for reflections, discussion starters, and thematic connections to the Faith First curriculum.
• Help families prepare for the Gospel reading each week by encouraging them to go to www.FaithFirst.com Invite them to click on Sunday Gospel Reflections in the Faith First for Families section.
• Assist the whole community in reflecting on the readings using the Questions of the Week for adults and children. Visit www.WholeCommunityCatechesis.com.

Incorporate Foundations in Faith as a rich resource that will assist you, a small group, or the larger community in preparing to hear and reflect on God’s word each week.
• Choose one way you will put the Gospel into action in your life and your community.
